Legendary vocal coach, Craig Derry, has over 45 years of experience as a performer, vocal coach, and music producer. Derry was born into a musical family, his father was a jazz singer, trumpeter, and piano player and his mother was a classical pianist. “We usually fell asleep listening to our dad play runs on the piano,” said Derry.
Derry’s father performed with big time jazz cats including Kita Betts, Carmen Leggio, Cab Calloway, Horace Silver which inspired him to play the trumpet. Coming from a musical family, Derry and his siblings excelled at their instruments, always taking first-chair and leading up their sections in the school band.
“Music was a paramount in our family,” said Derry.
In college, Derry alongside his brother and some of his classmates formed a band called Show Time 1 & 2. “I got a bite from the performance bug and never looked back,” said Derry. Through his journey, Derry learned important fundamentals and passed them on musical greats including Etta James, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Mary J Blige, Mick Jagger, Bono, and Bruce Springsteen.
Today, Derry specializes in vocal training, passing down his trillion dollar art form for Pop, R&B, and Hip Hop. He helps singers develop their talent and take their voice to the next level through vocal techniques and exercises. Just like an athlete trains for hours a day, the same applies to vocalists. Practice and preparation are the key to success. “A lot of artists get caught up in makeup, clothes, and dancing and they don’t put enough emphasis on the preparation of their vocals,” said Derry.
