10th Anniversary of the LI Nano Cask Ale Festival

The LI Nano Cask Ale Festival is an intimate event where Long Island homebrewers and breweries pour locally-brewed small batch beers. This year was the 10th Anniversary of the LI Nano Cask Ale Festival, celebrating the homebrew community where several local breweries have emerged from.  Below is a list of the tastiest and most interesting beers from the festival.

Homebrew Clubs

Homebrews and Hangrenades brewed a light and easy to drink Wild Ale repurposing canned peaches to make the beer. They also experimented with ginger root for their Ginger AF beer, heavy on the ginger.

The Brewers East End Revival sampled a Belgian Tripel called Tipple This Tripel and My Kind of Worship, a trappist single. The Long Island Malt Enthusiasts poured a Milkshake IPA called Definitely Not an Orange Juice Milkshake, brewed with lactose, conditioned vanilla beans, and tangerine peels, reminiscent of a creamsicle.

The Long Island Malt Enthusiasts Triple B Stout combined the three best b’s: bourbon, bacon, and brownies. This stout was salty, sweet, and slightly bitter from the bourbon, but very drinkable with a 6% abv.

Belgian Style

Jamie Adams from Saint James Brewery poured his award-winning Dubbel, a gold medal winner at the 2017 Governor’s Cup. Saint James Brewery is a member of the Farm Bureau of New York and uses locally-grown fresh hops as well as locally-sourced ingredients in their beers. These ingredients create delicious beers, and increase the demand for locally-grown products, positively impacting the economy on Long Island.

Blind Bat Brewery crafted a Belgian inspired beer using local ingredients. This golden ale called Hell Gate, contains 100 percent New York state barley and New York glacier hops.

Stone Beer

Rocky Point Artisan Brewery made a cask-style steinbier (stone beer) using the same methods they used in the Middle Ages. Hot stones are added to the beer to caramelize the sugars and add a smoky toffee flavor to this classic cask-style steinbier.

Hops & Hemp

One of the fastest growing beverage trends is craft beers containing CBD and cannabidiol. Hops and hemp are being combined since they have similar properties, flavor, and aroma. Spider Bite Beer Company unveiled their NEIPA with hemp oil and Square Head Brewing brewed a brown ale with hemp seeds called The Only Explanation.

Dessert & Coffee

Stouts are porters are great beers to warm up to during the winter and have notes of chocolate and coffee. Port Jeff Brewing Company poured their Coffee Pale Ale and Coffee Breakfast Stout at the festival. Both of these brews contain coffee from the King Coast Coffee shop in Shirley.

Barrage Brewing Company, known for crafting up dessert-style beers like Assault N’ Fudgery, kept things basic and brewed a no-frills yet fabulous “stout.”

1940’s Brewing Company poured a decadent Cappuccino Tiramisu Milk Stout that was smooth and sweet. W A Meadwerks combined a childhood favorite, peanut butter and jelly in their Peanut Butter and Grape Drink for a salty and sweet finish.
